City Symbol
The city symbol was officially introduced on June 15, 1960 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the merging of Nonoichi Town and Tomioku Village. The symbol is made up of two hiragana ‘no’s (の) and contains inside it the shape of a traditional Japanese 'fundo' weight (a circle with two smaller circles cut out of its sides).
Camellia, the city flower
The camellia was officially chosen as the city flower in 1974. Camellias have grown all over Nonoichi since long ago, and there is even a cultivar of camellia called ‘Nonoichi’ which is white with a tinge of pink.
The City Hall (2005-present)
In December 2004, the new Nonoichi Town Hall and Information and Exchange Center Camellia finished construction. The building was designed to be a space to bring people together and help citizens connect with each other. It became the city hall in November 2011 when Nonoichi Town officially became Nonoichi City.
The City Mascot ‘Notty’
‘Notty’ is a mysterious creature who had started inhabiting Nonoichi before we knew it. Where it was born and where it came from is shrouded in mystery.
It was originally the mascot for the community bus which started operations in 2003 but went on to become the official mascot of Nonoichi in February 2010 after gaining popularity for its cute appearance.
